There is a wonderful website called GameFAQs, that is a giant online gaming community, but also mainly a giant index of home-written FAQs (guides) for nearly every game on the planet. The website is wildly successful, and I have to admit, I use it on a regular basis. One of the cool things about it is that everyday, there is a "Top 10 ..." list, user submitted, and of course centering around games, and a new poll. Millions of people look at both the list and the poll daily, including me.
The list today was "The Top 10 Best Storylines in a Video Game".
Number 4, ladies and gentlemen.
Majora's Mask storyline is not like the other's here. It is not very deep. There isn't much to it, yet it's one of my favorite storylines to date. The way the game lays out the story, lays out the impending doom of the entire planet to be destroyed...it gives the player a sense of dread. The story builds on how many lives will be lost if the moon breaks its orbit and smashes the planet to bits. It plays on the dread factor and isn't shy in reminding you that doom is approaching. You play as Link, and you play continuously through a three day cycle using masks to help you time travel, to attempt to prevent the whole place from being smashed to bits. Great presentation.
Obviously this guy didn't play quite as much of the game as I did, because while the main plot wasn't very deep, as I explained before
the side quests are deeper than most novels. But that's okay! Because his opinions are the game are nearly identical to mine! See?
SOLID PROOF BEEOTCH.
Honestly. A very solid feeling of doom, of hopelessness.
And it's so... fucking... good.
Anyways. My little tidbit of Majora's Mask for you.
